DVS and PSS from TFL . . . What’s it all about?

From October 2024 Transport for London (TFL) updated their Direct Vision Standards (DVS), which measures how much an HGV driver can see through their cab window. The aim is to set minimum standards which improves visibility, and safeguard other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

HGVs over 12 tonnes are now required to be three-star rated or to fit a Progressive Safe System (PSS) in order to enter Greater London. A PSS involves installing additional devices that will alert the driver when road users are in the vehicle’s blind spot.

Once your PSS is installed, you must provide proof of installation to TFL and apply for your HGV Safety permit, which is required to enter and operate in most areas of Greater London. If you do not have a valid permit, you may receive a fine or Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). TFL are employing ANPR technology to monitor registered vehicles.
